On Distraction
Diego Delas
2015
This text is a journey through the relation between installation art and the heritage of image-making in ancient Greece and beyond. Presented as a double-speed freeform piece of writing, it merges specific research surrounding the art of memory and its resonance within the realm of alchemical engravings, emblems and hieroglyphics as well as tarot cards, freemasonry symbolism and finally installation art.
Deeply rooted in the idea of distraction, this text is in itself a journey distracted trough imagery and operates as a disinterested play of thought (similar to the surrealists games). It wanders around, doubts, and comes and goes within ideas and reflections and as such it should be taken.
The methods and structures developed in this text responds to my interest in memory and things (i.e. objects, traces or tracks) in space. These configure into a memory device in itself, which is based within fiction. Since the human brain learns faster through analogy, this journey is wrapped within fiction and structured in such way so as to be fixed in memory, which can easily be revisited. Therefore, the stresses that appear within the structure should be taken up more so than the thesis it refuses to hold on to. It is distraction, or a slight of hand in order to speak of the elements that are present in my practice.
